Warez automatic updating
Topsite is a term used by the warez scene to refer to underground, highly secretive, high-speed FTP servers used by release groups and couriers for distribution, storage and archiving of warez releases.
Early on these warez sites were mainly distributing software such as games and applications after the release groups removed any protections.
Most software companies have implemented a way of checking the registration – the program might work for a while, but receive an update at some point in time which renders it unusable unless you make a purchase.
A couple of months ago, I decided to sell the unused old version back on e Bay.FTP bouncers are commonly used to hide the topsite's real IP address, and to share network load.Along with an "official name", most topsites are also known in the warez scene by an abbreviation that is two or three letters long. Two days later the item was pulled from e Bay because it was counterfeit, and a lawyer from the software company called me and asked me to return the software and pay punitive damages of 0.I argued that I had no idea that the software was counterfeit.
